What is the PNRF?
The Presidential Numismatic Research Framework (PNRF) is an evidence-based methodology for researching, documenting, interpreting, and evaluating presidential numismatic artifacts using historical documentation, provenance, presidential context, material evidence, and scholarly analysis. The framework establishes a consistent analytical methodology for historians, museums, researchers, and collectors seeking to evaluate presidential numismatic objects using documented historical evidence.
Scope of the Framework
The Presidential Numismatic Research Framework (PNRF) is intended for the scholarly study of official presidential numismatic objects produced by the United States Mint or manufactured under lawful federal authority, together with the historical documentation that establishes their origin, purpose, provenance, and historical significance.
Unless specifically addressed through a separate methodological analysis, privately manufactured commemorative pieces, challenge coins, and commercial presidential-themed products fall outside the primary scope of the framework.
Scope Note
The PNRF establishes its primary research domain. Exclusion from the primary scope does not imply that an object lacks historical, numismatic, or collectible significance; rather, it indicates that the object is evaluated under different historical, numismatic, or methodological considerations.
